About this spectacle

Rising from the deep sapphire waters of Crater Lake, Phantom Ship is a jagged volcanic island that pierces the surface near the lake's southern shore. Its dark andesite spires and eroded ridgelines resemble the silhouette of a ghost ship under sail, an effect that becomes most theatrical in low-angle morning light or when mist drifts across the caldera. Visitors view it from overlooks along Rim Drive — particularly from Sun Notch viewpoint — gazing down hundreds of feet to where the island's fractured lava formations reflect in the clearest lake water in North America. The surrounding landscape of steep caldera walls, snowfields, and volcanic pumice adds geological drama. Breezes carry the scent of pine from the surrounding Cascades forest. The island itself hosts several rare plant species, but the primary draw is the visual spectacle of this ancient volcanic remnant set against impossibly blue water.
