Coral Triangle Biodiversity Dive — Raja Ampat Indonesia
Raja Ampat Archipelago in West Papua — the apex of the Coral Triangle where the diversity of marine life reaches its global maximum — has been measured at 75% of the world's known coral species, 1,300 fish species, and 699 mollusc species in a single archipelago of 1,500 islands. The walk-on snorkel from the homestays of Kri and Mansuar islands — entering the water from the beach and finding yourself surrounded by more fish species in a single 30-minute snorkel than most marine biologists see in a year of work — creates a marine encounter of extraordinary biological intensity. The wobbegong shark lounging on the reef top, the schools of bat-fish passing in mid-water, the pygmy seahorses on fan coral, and the wobbegong 'walking' on its pectoral fins across the sand create a biological inventory available in no other single location on Earth, and the Raja Ampat homestay's simplicity and remoteness add an exploratory quality to the world's finest coral reef experience.
About this spectacle
Slipping into the water from a homestay beach on Kri or Mansuar Island, you enter what marine biologists describe as the most biodiverse reef system on Earth. Within minutes, surgeonfish, parrotfish, and batfish part around you in mid-water columns while a wobbegong shark rests motionless on the coral plateau below. Fan corals host pygmy seahorses no larger than a thumbnail. A wobbegong 'walks' on its pectoral fins across the sandy bottom. Schools of fish arrive in waves, each species different from the last, in a density and variety that overwhelms the senses. The water is warm and clear, the reef structure complex and layered — rubble, bommies, walls, and sandy channels each supporting their own communities. Everything here feels simultaneously wild and intimate: the homestay is steps from the water, the reef begins at knee depth, and nothing about the experience is staged or managed. It is simply the ocean at its fullest biological expression.
