About this spectacle

The Blue Lagoon at Comino is a sheltered cove of startlingly turquoise water tucked between the tiny island of Comino and the islet of Cominotto. On calm days the sea shimmers in vivid electric blue and aquamarine, its clarity so extreme that the white sandy seabed is visible from the surface. Visitors arrive by boat to find rocky limestone edges framing the lagoon, with shallow, warm water ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The surrounding coastline is scrubby and largely undeveloped, giving the cove a remote feel that belies how accessible it is. In summer the lagoon draws dense crowds of day-trippers and pleasure boats, filling the anchorage with colourful vessels. Early morning or late afternoon, before and after the main ferry runs, the lagoon regains a quieter character and the light turns the water extraordinary shades of teal and cobalt. There is little shade on land; the experience is dominated by the sea itself.
