Cirque de Salazie

About this spectacle

The Cirque de Salazie is one of three dramatic calderas carved into the volcanic interior of Réunion Island, a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean. Visitors descending into the cirque encounter sheer basalt cliffs draped in cascading waterfalls, dense tropical vegetation clinging to near-vertical walls, and mist that rolls through the valley in shifting curtains of white. The village of Hell-Bourg, nestled on the cirque floor, offers a glimpse of Creole architecture framed by towering green amphitheatre walls. The air is cool and humid, heavy with the scent of fern and volcanic earth. Waterfalls — including the famous Voile de la Mariée — plunge hundreds of metres down the cliff faces, audible before they are visible. Narrow roads wind through sugar cane and hydrangea to viewpoints that reward the patient traveller with panoramic views across the entire volcanic basin, a landscape simultaneously intimate and awe-inspiring.
