Cinque Terre Coast
Five rainbow-hued cliff villages tumbling to the Ligurian Sea — one of Europe's most dramatic and painterly coastlines.
About this spectacle
The Cinque Terre coast is a dramatic stretch of the Italian Riviera where five centuries-old fishing villages — Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore — cling to near-vertical cliffs above the turquoise Ligurian Sea. Walking the coastal trails, visitors are rewarded with cascading terraced vineyards, pastel-coloured houses stacked against rugged rock faces, and the sound of waves crashing far below. The light in the late afternoon turns the stone buildings golden, and the scent of sea salt and broom flowers carries on the breeze. Boats bob in tiny harbours, and swifts wheel overhead. The panoramic views from the higher paths look out across layered headlands dissolving into the blue haze of the sea, offering some of the most photogenic coastal scenery in Europe.
