The fairy chimneys of Théus rise from the eroded badlands of the Hautes-Alpes in southeastern France, a surreal landscape of tall earth pillars capped by protective stone hats. Formed over millennia as softer clay and marl eroded around harder rock fragments, each column stands like a sentinel in a ravine of ochre, grey, and rust-hued earth. Visitors walk among these towering formations, sometimes reaching heights of several metres, feeling dwarfed by shapes that shift in colour as the light changes through the day. The silence of the valley is broken only by wind and the crunch of dry soil underfoot.
