About this spectacle

Cheddar Gorge cuts through the Mendip Hills in Somerset, England, forming one of Britain's most dramatic limestone landscapes. Sheer cliff faces rise on either side of the narrow road, stained amber and grey, carved by ancient meltwater floods over millennia. Visitors walk beneath overhanging rock walls that dwarf everything below, with buzzards circling the thermals overhead. The gorge floor is dotted with caves — some accessible as show caves — where stalactites and stalagmites crowd dimly lit chambers. In autumn, warm colours spill down the slopes as the scrub vegetation turns. The air carries a mineral coolness even on summer days. Seasonal waterfalls appear after heavy rain, and the clifftop walks offer sweeping views across the Somerset Levels. Wildlife is abundant: rare Cheddar pink flowers cling to ledges, and the rocky terrain supports populations of peregrine falcons, jackdaws, and wild Soay sheep grazing the upper terraces.
