Channel Islands Painted Cave
One of the world's largest sea caves, Painted Cave dazzles with mineral-streaked walls and electric blue water accessible only by kayak or boat.
About this spectacle
Carved into the sea cliffs of Santa Cruz Island in Channel Islands National Park, Painted Cave is one of the largest and longest sea caves in the world. Visitors approach by kayak or small boat, drifting through water that shifts from deep blue to electric turquoise as the cave mouth narrows. Inside, the walls display vivid lichen and mineral streaks in reds, blacks, and oranges — the source of the cave's name. The low ceiling amplifies the sound of swells surging and echoing off ancient rock, creating a sensory experience that is equal parts awe and mild unease. Bioluminescent plankton may glow beneath the hull on calm evenings. Harbor seals occasionally haul out near the entrance. The play of light — sunbeams refracting through the water and bouncing off cave walls — is the defining visual, best captured in the first hours of morning when the sun angle is low and direct.
