Cascade du Hérisson
A dramatic staircase of waterfalls plunging through a forested Jura gorge — one of France's most beautiful woodland water walks.
About this spectacle
The Cascade du Hérisson in the Jura region of eastern France is a celebrated series of waterfalls cascading down a wooded gorge, most famously the dramatic Éventail fall. Visitors follow a well-worn trail through dense forest, hearing the roar of white water long before it comes into view. The falls tumble over limestone shelves sculpted by millennia of erosion, and the spray creates a cool microclimate even in summer heat. In autumn the surrounding beech and maple woodland blazes with colour, framing the churning water in golds and reds. In winter the falls can partially freeze, forming spectacular ice formations on the rock faces. The path winds past a succession of cascades of varying size, rewarding walkers with repeated surprises around each bend. Light filters through the canopy to catch the mist, making this a visually rich and immersive walk at almost any time of year.
