Carysfort Reef — United States
A living coral reef in the Florida Keys crowned by a 19th-century iron lighthouse, offering vivid underwater scenery for divers and snorkelers.
About this spectacle
Carysfort Reef is one of the northernmost coral reefs in the Florida Keys, situated offshore in the warm, clear waters of the Atlantic. Snorkelers and divers encounter a living mosaic of elkhorn and brain corals, sponges, and reef fish in vivid tropical colors. The historic Carysfort Lighthouse, a 19th-century iron screw-pile structure, rises from the reef and provides an iconic visual backdrop above the waterline. Below the surface, schools of sergeant majors, parrotfish, and occasional nurse sharks move through the coral heads. The water clarity can be exceptional on calm days, allowing sunlight to illuminate the reef structure in dramatic shafts. Boat access from Key Largo makes this a popular destination for guided dive trips, though the reef's distance offshore means conditions vary with wind and sea state.
