About this spectacle

Hickman Bridge is a natural sandstone arch spanning the Fremont River canyon in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. The trail winds through a landscape of red and cream Navajo sandstone, past domed canyon walls and desert scrub, before arriving at the arch framing a wedge of sky above. Standing beneath the bridge, visitors feel dwarfed by the sheer mass of rock overhead. The silence is punctuated only by wind and occasional raven calls. Light shifts dramatically across the canyon walls through the day, turning the sandstone golden in the late afternoon. The surrounding Waterpocket Fold geology is visible on the horizon, giving context to the immense forces that carved this formation. The trail itself passes remnants of Fremont petroglyphs, adding a layered sense of deep time to the walk.
