About this spectacle

Cape Greco, on the southeastern tip of Cyprus, harbors a dramatic stretch of sea caves carved into golden limestone cliffs by millennia of wave action. Visitors stand at the cliff edge or descend to waterline platforms to watch turquoise Mediterranean water surge and recede through arched sea caves and natural rock bridges. The play of light on the water inside the caves shifts from deep teal to brilliant aquamarine depending on sun angle. Snorkelers and divers explore the submerged openings while those on foot follow coastal paths that weave between the formations. The coastline forms part of the Cape Greco National Forest Park, keeping it largely free of commercial development. Wind-driven swells amplify the spectacle in autumn and winter, when waves crash through the arches in dramatic plumes of spray. On calm summer mornings the water is glassy and the cave interiors glow with refracted light.
