Cape Gannet Colony Lambert's Bay — South Africa
The Cape gannet (Morus capensis) colony on Bird Island at Lambert's Bay — accessible via a causeway from the harbour — is South Africa's most visited seabird colony: 13,000 pairs on a compact island whose entire surface is covered in nesting gannets at densities that make walking impossible. The colony's noise and smell are overwhelming at the fence line 3 metres from the nearest nests, and the combined visual effect of 13,000 black-and-yellow-headed gannets in constant social activity — preening, billing, nest-defence disputes, and the incoming and outgoing flight stream of foraging birds — creates a seabird spectacle of the highest intensity. The causeway approach — walking toward an island that appears from a distance to be white with birds, the sound building from silence to roar over the 200-metre approach — is one of South Africa's finest wildlife arrival experiences.
About this spectacle
Walking the 200-metre causeway from Lambert's Bay harbour toward Bird Island, the visual transformation is gradual and then overwhelming: what first appears as a white smear on the horizon resolves into tens of thousands of Cape gannets — black-winged, golden-headed, intensely social. By the time visitors reach the fence, the noise is a continuous, discordant roar and the ammonia-rich smell of a dense colony is inescapable. Standing just 3 metres from the nearest nests, visitors watch gannets engage in constant theatrical activity: elaborate mutual preening, the sky-pointing billing displays of bonded pairs, explosive territorial disputes at nest boundaries, and the steady procession of birds launching seaward and returning with fish. The island's surface is so densely packed that no bare ground is visible. The flight stream of incoming and outgoing birds passes directly overhead. This is seabird watching at full sensory volume — not a distant view through a telescope but an immersive wall of life that is simultaneously chaotic and hypnotic.
