Walking the 200-metre causeway from Lambert's Bay harbour toward Bird Island, the visual transformation is gradual and then overwhelming: what first appears as a white smear on the horizon resolves into tens of thousands of Cape gannets — black-winged, golden-headed, intensely social. By the time visitors reach the fence, the noise is a continuous, discordant roar and the ammonia-rich smell of a dense colony is inescapable. Standing just 3 metres from the nearest nests, visitors watch gannets engage in constant theatrical activity: elaborate mutual preening, the sky-pointing billing displays of bonded pairs, explosive territorial disputes at nest boundaries, and the steady procession of birds launching seaward and returning with fish. The island's surface is so densely packed that no bare ground is visible. The flight stream of incoming and outgoing birds passes directly overhead.
