Cap Gris-Nez
France's closest point to England — where the Channel narrows to a grey ribbon and Dover's cliffs shimmer on the horizon.
About this spectacle
Cap Gris-Nez is a dramatic chalk and clay headland jutting into the Strait of Dover at the narrowest crossing between France and England. Standing at the cape, visitors are confronted by the raw power of the Channel: swells driven by Atlantic weather systems crash against the base of the cliffs, sending spray high into the air. On clear days the white cliffs of Dover are visible across just 33 kilometres of open water, making the English coast feel tantalizingly close. The headland is crowned by a lighthouse whose beam sweeps out over one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, where tankers, ferries and container ships pass in near-constant procession. Migrating raptors and seabirds funnel past in autumn, and the exposed grassy clifftops are blanketed with wildflowers in spring. Wind is almost always present, carrying the salt tang of the North Sea, and the shifting light over the Strait produces extraordinary photographic conditions at dawn and dusk.
