Cap de la Hague — Nez de Jobourg
Ancient granite cliffs at France's northwestern tip, overlooking one of Europe's fastest tidal races with views to the Channel Islands.
About this spectacle
The Nez de Jobourg at Cap de la Hague thrusts into the Atlantic at Normandy's northwestern tip, where ancient Precambrian granite — among the oldest rock in France — meets some of Europe's most powerful tidal races. Visitors stand on sheer cliffs that plunge dramatically to churning green-grey seas below, the air thick with salt and the sound of waves crashing against fractured rock. The headland offers sweeping panoramas across the Alderney Race, one of the fastest tidal currents in the world, with the Channel Islands visible on clear days. Wind-sculpted heathland of gorse and heather blankets the plateau behind the cliff edge, turning gold and purple in late summer. Seabirds — fulmars, gannets, guillemots — ride the thermals overhead. The sheer scale of the cliffs, the violence of the sea below, and the sense of geological antiquity combine to create an experience of raw, elemental Normandy landscape.
