About this spectacle

High in the limestone peaks of Picos de Europa, the Cantabrian chamois — a subspecies endemic to these mountains — picks its way across vertiginous ridges and scree slopes with almost supernatural confidence. Visitors who make the ascent to the upper zones are rewarded with sightings of small herds grazing on alpine meadows or pausing on rocky outcrops against a backdrop of jagged grey summits. In autumn, rutting males chase rivals across exposed ledges in dramatic displays of agility and aggression. The thin mountain air carries the clatter of hooves on limestone and the occasional piercing whistle of a sentinel animal scenting danger. Golden eagles ride thermals overhead, and the silence between wind gusts is complete. It is a landscape that feels genuinely wild — remote enough to reward effort but accessible via cable car at Fuente Dé to those unwilling to hike the full altitude gain.
