The sound is constant — water tumbling over smooth stone — while the surrounding Serranía de la Macarena rises in tepui formations above a patchwork of cloud forest and distant llanos. The red colour only appears in a precise seasonal window between July and November, when water levels drop enough to let sunlight reach the plants but not so low as to dry them out. Reaching the river requires a small-plane flight into La Macarena town, then guided travel into the national park.
