About this spectacle

Rising dramatically above the ancient city of Dali, the Cangshan mountains form a sweeping backdrop of snow-capped peaks, deep gorges, and cascading streams that have shaped this corner of Yunnan for millennia. As a UNESCO Global Geopark, the range preserves extraordinary exposures of Precambrian metamorphic rocks, glacial landforms, and alpine meadows that tell a billion-year story in stone. Visitors ascending by cable car or on foot pass through layers of evergreen forest, rhododendron groves that burst into colour in spring, and open ridgelines where glacial lakes shimmer in hollows carved during the last ice age. The air is cool and sharp, and on clear days the panoramic views stretch across Erhai Lake below and far into the surrounding plateau. Geological enthusiasts will find well-exposed folds and faults; nature lovers encounter diverse birdlife and wildflowers. The mountain's scale and vertical relief make every visit feel genuinely immersive.
