About this spectacle

Cachoeira da Fumaça, whose name translates to 'Smoke Waterfall', is one of Brazil's tallest and most dramatic free-falling waterfalls, located in the Chapada Diamantina highlands of Bahia. Visitors who make the trek to the cliff's edge are greeted by a tremendous plume of mist rising upward — strong updrafts atomize the falling water before it reaches the valley floor, creating the ethereal 'smoke' effect that gives the falls its name. The surrounding landscape is rugged cerrado and gallery forest, with sweeping panoramas across the plateau. The roar of wind and water mingles with silence on the trail, punctuated by birdsong and the rush of cool air rising from the gorge below. Two viewing options exist: the top viewpoint, reached after a multi-hour hike, and a longer route to the base through the valley. Both offer fundamentally different perspectives — one vertiginous and aerial, the other intimate and drenched in mist.
