Cabo Vilán
A wild Atlantic headland on Galicia's Coast of Death, where granite cliffs, crashing swells, and a historic lighthouse meet at Spain's dramatic western edge.
About this spectacle
Cabo Vilán is a dramatic granite headland jutting into the Atlantic on the Costa da Morte in Galicia, Spain. Visitors encounter rugged sea cliffs battered by powerful ocean swells, with the wind a near-constant presence even in calm weather. The cape's lighthouse — one of Spain's first electric lighthouses — stands as a sentinel against grey Atlantic skies. On clear days the horizon stretches endlessly westward, and on stormy days the waves crash with tremendous force against the dark rock, throwing spray high into the air. Seabirds wheel overhead and the air carries the sharp salt of the open sea. The surrounding moorland is dotted with low heather and rock, and on foggy mornings the landscape takes on an almost otherworldly, melancholic atmosphere wholly distinct from the sun-drenched coasts of southern Spain.
