Burney Falls
A spring-fed curtain of water pouring from a basalt cliff year-round — Burney Falls stays full and turquoise even in California's driest summers.
About this spectacle
Burney Falls is a year-round waterfall in McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park in Northern California, fed by underground springs that pour directly from the basalt cliff face as well as over the top lip, creating a distinctive curtain-like cascade. The falls plunge roughly 129 feet into a turquoise pool, with spring water seeping through every crack in the volcanic rock so that the flow barely changes even in the driest California summers. The mist at the base softens the air and nurtures dense ferns and mosses clinging to the dark lava walls. A short loop trail winds down to the pool's edge and along Burney Creek, offering close views of the falls from multiple angles. The combination of rushing white water, emerald vegetation, and the geological drama of a spring-fed volcanic landscape makes it one of the most visually striking waterfalls in California.
