Bruneau Sand Dunes
Towering sand dunes rise over 470 feet from Idaho's high desert, flanked by clear lakes—a striking geological oddity in the American West.
About this spectacle
Bruneau Sand Dunes State Park in southern Idaho is home to some of the tallest single-structured sand dunes in North America, rising dramatically from the high desert floor. Visitors experience the surreal contrast of towering dune faces against a stark sagebrush landscape, with small lakes nestled at the dunes' base reflecting sky and sand. The silence is profound—wind sculpts rippled patterns across the surface, and footsteps sink softly into warm golden sand. Climbing to the dune crest rewards with sweeping panoramas of the Snake River Plain. At night, the park hosts an observatory open to the public, offering remarkably dark skies. Sunsets paint the dunes in amber and rose, and dawn light throws long shadows that reveal the dunes' full sculptural drama. Wildlife including waterfowl, raptors, and small desert mammals inhabit the lake margins and surrounding desert.
