Brown Bear Berry Season — Carpathian Romania

Romania's Carpathian Mountains hold the largest brown bear population in Europe outside Russia — over 6,000 individuals in the Eastern Carpathians — and the late summer berry and beechnut season from July through October concentrates bears in the mountain berry fields and beech forests in numbers that make encounters both reliable and, from high seat hides, entirely safe. The Poiana Brasov and Covasna areas of the Transylvanian Alps offer the most organised bear watching in Europe, with evening hide sessions producing sightings of multiple bears simultaneously at baited sites in the forest clearings. The Carpathian bears' combination of the wild forest setting, the absence of any North American 'bear jam' tourism culture, and the genuine density of the population makes Romania the finest bear-watching destination in Europe — more bears than Scandinavia, more accessible than Russia, with a landscape context of beautiful mountain forest.

About this spectacle

As summer ripens into autumn across Romania's Eastern Carpathians, thousands of brown bears descend on mountain berry fields and beech forest clearings to gorge on bilberries, raspberries, and beechnuts. Concealed in elevated timber hides — locally called 'high seats' — visitors watch as multiple bears emerge at dusk into forest glades, often just metres away, their behaviour unhurried and natural. The air carries the resinous scent of spruce and damp earth. Bears shuffle through undergrowth, occasionally sparring over favoured feeding spots. Because the Carpathians hold Europe's largest brown bear population outside Russia, sightings are near-guaranteed during the July–October peak. The forests around Covasna and Poiana Brasov are managed specifically for bear watching, and the hide system keeps both observer and bear at ease. Crickets fill the silence between cracks of breaking branches. As light fades, the silhouettes of three, four, or more bears against the clearing create images of extraordinary power and intimacy.
