At Brooks Falls, a 1.8-metre drop in the river becomes a stage for one of wildlife's most visceral dramas. During the July peak, dozens of brown bears — up to 60 at once — crowd the lip, pools, and shallows, each deploying its own learned technique: lunging for airborne salmon mid-leap, waiting motionless in the current, or scooping from calm eddies below. The air smells of fish and cold river water; the sound is a constant tumble of falls punctuated by splashing bears and the thrash of hooked salmon. Viewing is from elevated wooden platforms just metres from the action. A second surge arrives in September as bears enter hyperphagia, fishing with urgent intensity before denning. The landscape is boreal and vast — spruce forest and tundra rolling to volcanic peaks. Every visit is different: a bear may snatch a leaping fish cleanly from the air, or miss repeatedly, revealing the patience and skill the season demands.
