Brockengespenst (Brocken Summit)
Namesake site for the spectre + glory phenomenon on the Brocken; frequent rime-ice landscapes.
About this spectacle
Standing atop the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains, visitors may witness the eerie Brockengespenst — a towering shadow of themselves cast onto mist or cloud below, often ringed by a circular rainbow-like halo called a glory. The phenomenon appears when the sun is behind the observer and fog or low cloud lies ahead, creating a ghostly, enlarged silhouette that moves as you move. In winter and early spring, the summit transforms further: freezing fog deposits thick rime ice on trees, rocks, and the weather station, sculpting a monochrome world of crystalline white. Winds can be fierce and visibility can drop to near zero within minutes. On clear days, panoramic views stretch across forested ridges. The interplay of fog, light, and ice gives the Brocken a persistently atmospheric, almost theatrical quality that changes hour by hour.
