Breitachklamm
Deepest rocky gorge in Central Europe, near Oberstdorf.
About this spectacle
Breitachklamm is one of the most dramatic gorges in Central Europe, where the Breitach river has carved a narrow passage through towering limestone walls near Oberstdorf in the Bavarian Alps. Visitors walk along wooden walkways and metal railings suspended above the churning, jade-green water as it thunders through gaps barely a few metres wide. The sheer walls rise steeply overhead, dripping with moisture and draped in moss, filtering sunlight into dim, cool shafts. In winter, the gorge transforms into a theatre of ice: frozen waterfalls and ice curtains cling to the rock faces, giving the canyon an otherworldly, crystalline quality. The roar of the river echoes between the walls, and the smell of damp stone and spray fills the air throughout the walk. The trail through the gorge is a genuinely immersive experience, alternating between tight passages, dramatic viewpoints, and the constant sensory presence of fast-moving water.
