About this spectacle

Standing on the Bonneville Salt Flats is a profoundly disorienting experience. The white crystalline crust stretches to every horizon, creating an almost perfect mirror when a thin film of water covers the surface in late winter and spring — the sky and earth blur into one seamless reflection. In the dry summer and autumn months, the salt bakes hard and blindingly bright under the desert sun, radiating heat in shimmering waves. The silence is immense; wind and the crunch of salt crystals underfoot are the only sounds. The surrounding mountain ranges float on the horizon like distant islands. Land speed record attempts have taken place here for over a century, adding a human dimension to the landscape's alien stillness. Photographers and visitors come for the geometric perfection of the flat, the vast skies, and light that shifts from blinding white midday to vivid gold at dusk.
