Blue Eye Spring Syri i Kalter
An impossibly blue karst spring in southern Albania where ice-cold water surges up from unknown depths, forming a vivid swirling eye of cobalt.
About this spectacle
Syri i Kalter, or the Blue Eye Spring, is a mesmerizing natural phenomenon in southern Albania where crystal-clear, intensely blue water wells up from an underground spring of unknown depth. Standing at the rim, visitors peer into a swirling pool of cobalt and turquoise — the colour shifts dramatically depending on light and angle. The water is strikingly cold year-round, fed by underground karst systems in the Muzina mountains. Surrounding the spring is a lush canopy of plane trees and dense forest, their reflections rippling across the surface. The rhythmic upwelling at the centre creates an almost hypnotic circular current, like a giant eye staring upward. The sound is gentle — birdsong and the subtle gurgle of the spring — making this an unusually peaceful encounter with raw geological force. Fish dart through the shallows. A short walk through forested park grounds leads visitors to the main pool.
