Standing in the cork oak dehesa of Sierra de San Pedro at dawn, you are among the great spectacles of European ornithology. As the morning sun warms the earth, Eurasian black vultures — each with a three-metre wingspan and weighing up to 12 kilograms — lift from their massive stick nests perched in ancient holm oaks and begin to circle lazily on the first thermals. These are the world's heaviest flying birds, and their sheer scale becomes visceral as they pass low overhead, the pale head and dark plumage catching the early light. The colony of 450 or more breeding pairs fills the sky with unhurried, commanding flight. Between the vulture trees, Spanish imperial eagles claim territory, great bustards display across open ground, and black storks move silently through the woodland edges — an extraordinary convergence of Europe's rarest large birds within a single Extremaduran landscape, set against the timeless open parkland of the dehesa.
