Black-browed Albatross Breeding Colony — Campbell Island
One of Earth's largest black-browed albatross colonies, on a remote sub-Antarctic island reachable only by expedition ship.
About this spectacle
Campbell Island, one of the most remote places on Earth, hosts one of the world's largest black-browed albatross colonies. Visitors arriving by expedition vessel are greeted by the sight and sound of thousands of these magnificent seabirds wheeling overhead and nesting across the tussock-covered slopes. The albatrosses — with wingspans approaching two metres — perform elaborate courtship dances, clatter their bills, and tend downy chicks in dense nesting clusters. The air carries the sharp scent of guano and salt spray. The colony's sheer scale and the birds' relative fearlessness create an overwhelming sensory experience. The surrounding sub-Antarctic landscape — windswept, treeless, and hauntingly beautiful — adds to the feeling of true wilderness. This is wildlife encounter at the edge of the habitable world.
