Aboard kayaks or whale-watching boats operating out of Tadoussac, you are almost certain to come within close range of these blunt-headed, finless whales, hearing their extraordinary repertoire of clicks, chirps, and whistles resonating through hulls and paddle shafts. Adults glow startlingly white against dark blue water; calves alongside them are slate-grey, not yet bleached by age. The surrounding drama intensifies with the presence of blue whales — the largest animals on Earth — feeding in the same stretch of estuary. The Saguenay fjord's steep forested walls provide a cinematic backdrop. Morning light on calm water produces ideal viewing and photography conditions. Hydrophones sometimes offered on tour vessels let you hear the 'canaries of the sea' in real time, adding an acoustic dimension rare in any wildlife encounter.
