Beaver Moon Pond — Algonquin Park Canada
Algonquin Provincial Park's beaver (Castor canadensis) ponds — over 2,000 active beaver lodges in the park, the beaver's role as ecosystem engineer having created the majority of the park's wetlands — are most active in October and November when beavers cache their winter food supply, felling birch and aspen and carrying branches to underwater larder piles beside the lodge entrance. The October beaver at dusk — the animal's deliberate, purposeful swimming with a freshly cut birch branch held crossways in its teeth, the V-wake behind it catching the last light, the sound of the teeth on wood in the pre-freeze silence — is one of the most tranquil and complete wildlife experiences in the Canadian autumn. The park's beaver dam system's transformation of the Precambrian Shield's topography — ponds and wetlands replacing what was formerly upland forest — is ecology's most visible single-species landscape modification.
About this spectacle
Algonquin Provincial Park holds over 2,000 active beaver lodges, making it one of the most concentrated beaver landscapes in North America. In October and November, beavers enter a period of intense activity, felling birch and aspen trees and ferrying freshly cut branches to underwater food caches beside their lodge entrances before freeze-up. Visitors stationed quietly at pond edges at dusk witness the animals swimming with purpose — a branch held crossways in the teeth, a clean V-wake spreading across the still water, the audible scrape of incisors on wood echoing in the cooling air. The ponds themselves are largely beaver-made: generations of dams have transformed the Precambrian Shield's rocky upland forest into an intricate mosaic of wetlands and open water. Birch and aspen leaves may still cling in the canopy or carpet the shore. The light fades early in October, silhouetting the lodge against a copper sky. There is no need to move far — a patient wait at the water's edge is enough.
