Beartooth Pass Summit
One of America's highest paved roads, Beartooth Pass Summit delivers jaw-dropping tundra and alpine panoramas straddling Wyoming and Montana.
About this spectacle
Beartooth Pass Summit rewards visitors with some of the most dramatic high-alpine scenery in the American Rockies. The road crests above 10,000 feet, where vast snowfields linger well into summer, wind-sculpted tundra stretches in every direction, and jagged granite peaks punctuate the horizon. On clear days the panoramic views extend for dozens of miles across Wyoming and Montana wilderness. Wildflowers blanket the meadows in brief summer bursts of color, and alpine wildlife — including marmots and bighorn sheep — are frequently spotted near the summit plateau. The air is thin and bracing, the sky enormous. Visitors often find themselves stepping out of their vehicles simply to stand in the silence, surrounded by a landscape that feels both ancient and overwhelming. Clouds build rapidly in the afternoons, adding drama but also risk, and sudden weather changes are part of the experience.
