Bash Bish Falls
Massachusetts's tallest waterfall drops in twin curtains through a dramatic Taconic gorge — a classic New England cascade at its most photogenic.
About this spectacle
Bash Bish Falls is the highest waterfall in Massachusetts, plunging through a dramatic gorge in the Taconic Mountains along the New York-Massachusetts border. Visitors hike through hemlock-shaded forest to reach the falls, where the stream splits around a midstream boulder and reunites in a curtain of white water that drops into a deep, cool plunge pool. The sound builds before you see it — a steady roar threading through the trees. In summer the pool glitters with refracted light; in autumn the surrounding hardwoods frame the cascade in vivid color; in winter ice formations cling to the granite walls and the falls may partially freeze. The narrow gorge amplifies every sound and keeps the air noticeably cool even on warm days. Swimming is officially prohibited but the visual drama of the falls alone draws steady visitation throughout the warmer months.
