Barbarossahöhle
One of two anhydrite show caves in the world, in the Kyffhäuser hills.
About this spectacle
Barbarossahöhle is one of only two anhydrite show caves in the world, making it a geological rarity that draws visitors to the gentle Kyffhäuser hills of Thuringia. Inside, massive chambers and passages reveal the distinctive crystalline texture of anhydrite rock — a calcium sulfate mineral that differs visibly from the more common limestone found in typical caves. The formations glow softly under the show-cave lighting, revealing pale grey and white surfaces shaped by ancient geological forces rather than the stalactites and stalagmites most visitors expect. The air inside is cool and still, and the silence of the underground passages gives the experience a contemplative atmosphere. Walking through the illuminated tunnels, visitors encounter both the eerie beauty of the mineral formations and the sense of geological deep time — a rare chance to stand inside a rock type that almost never forms accessible cave systems. The cave is managed as a show cave, meaning paths and lighting are in place for guided tours.
