Bald Eagle Winter Gathering — Chilkat Valley Alaska

The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve near Haines in southeast Alaska hosts the world's largest annual bald eagle concentration — 3,000–4,000 eagles gathering October through January to feed on the late-running chum salmon that the Chilkat River's unusual upwelling groundwater keeps unfrozen. The eagles' concentration on the river bars and trees — standing on every boulder, perching in every cottonwood — creates one of North America's most overwhelming single-species wildlife spectacles: trees appearing to have been festooned with white-and-dark ornaments, every tree visible from the viewing area carrying 10–30 bald eagles while hundreds more circle above. The combination of the Alaskan November light, the snow-covered Takshanuk Mountains, and the salmon-working eagles creates the definitive bald eagle image, and the relative ease of access from Haines (connected by ferry to Juneau) makes the Chilkat Valley America's finest eagle destination.

About this spectacle

Standing in the Chilkat Valley in November, visitors are confronted with a spectacle almost too extraordinary to process: thousands of bald eagles packed along the river bars, perched on every cottonwood branch, standing on every exposed boulder. The official count reaches 3,000–4,000 birds, and the effect is surreal — trees that appear to drip with white heads and dark wings, the air filled with the constant calling and circling of birds competing for salmon. The Chilkat River's groundwater upwelling keeps sections ice-free through deepest winter, locking eagles in place for weeks. In the low-angle November light, with the snow-weighted Takshanuk Mountains as backdrop, the scene delivers extraordinary photographic drama — a white-and-dark living ornament display across every surface. Morning light strikes the cottonwoods from ideal angles. The viewing area is road-accessible from Haines, which is ferry-linked to Juneau, making this one of the most accessible truly world-class wildlife spectacles in North America.
