Bako Proboscis Monkey Dusk Return — Sarawak Malaysia

Bako National Park on Sarawak's Muara Tebas Peninsula is the finest accessible proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) site in Malaysian Borneo — habituated groups at the mangrove edges of Teluk Assam and Teluk Delima visible from the park's beach and river trails throughout the day, reaching their maximum visibility in the late afternoon when the mangrove groups aggregate for the overnight roost. The male's pendulous nose (largest in the group, reaching 10 centimetres and drooping over the mouth) and the group's collective 'honk' alarm calls, their extraordinary swimming ability (proboscis monkeys are the finest swimmers of any non-human primate), and the groups' dramatic cross-river swimming during daily movements create encounter opportunities that the more famous Kinabatangan River sites also offer but in smaller group sizes and with fewer guaranteed sightings per visit.

About this spectacle

As late afternoon light filters through the coastal dipterocarp forest, proboscis monkeys — the males unmistakable with their bulbous, drooping noses — begin gathering at the mangrove fringes of Teluk Assam and Teluk Delima. Visitors watching from the beach or river trails can observe groups consolidating into overnight roost assemblies, a spectacle amplified by the resonant 'honk' alarm calls echoing across the water. The monkeys' pot-bellied silhouettes are visible in the low canopy, and with luck you'll witness animals launching themselves into the river in graceful, splashing cross-water swims — a behaviour unique among primates. The habituated groups at Bako allow close observation without boats or guides, distinguishing this site from river-cruise alternatives. The mangrove backdrop, the warm equatorial dusk light, and the charismatic animals combining into a reliable, intimate wildlife encounter that rewards patience along the shoreline trails.
