Avakas Gorge
A narrow limestone canyon in western Cyprus where sheer rock walls close in overhead, framing a lush, boulder-strewn gorge walk unlike anything else on the island.
About this spectacle
Avakas Gorge is a dramatic natural canyon carved through limestone hills near the Akamas Peninsula in western Cyprus. Visitors walk along a seasonal stream bed flanked by towering rock walls that rise steeply on both sides, narrowing in places to just a few metres across. The gorge is richly vegetated — native plane trees, oleanders, and wild orchids crowd the canyon floor — creating a cool, shaded corridor even in the heat of a Cypriot summer. The sound of trickling water and birdsong echoes off the pale rock faces. The trail requires scrambling over boulders and crossing the stream multiple times, giving the hike an adventurous feel without demanding technical skills. Wildflowers bloom vigorously in spring, and the canyon walls display striking geological strata. Wildlife including birds of prey and reptiles inhabits the cliff faces. The gorge ends where the walls begin to open out, offering a natural turnaround point before retracing the path.
