Australian Sea Lion Breeding Colony (Dangerous Reef) — Point Labatt
Australia's only permanent mainland sea lion colony — watch wild pups and bulls from a clifftop platform on the Eyre Peninsula.
About this spectacle
Point Labatt Conservation Park on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula is home to Australia's only permanent mainland Australian sea lion colony. Visitors approach a clifftop viewing platform overlooking the rocky shoreline below, where dozens of sea lions haul out, nurse pups, and spar with each other in full view. The sounds of barking bulls and bleating pups carry up the cliffs on the sea breeze, while the turquoise Southern Ocean stretches behind them. Nearby Dangerous Reef, a protected island further offshore, hosts an additional breeding population. The animals are present year-round, though breeding activity intensifies in warmer months. Watching pups tumble over adults and bulls defend their territory against the backdrop of rugged limestone cliffs is an intimate encounter with a species found nowhere else on Earth in the wild.
