About this spectacle

Perched on Mount Nuolja above Abisko in Swedish Lapland, the Aurora Sky Station offers one of the world's most celebrated vantage points for witnessing the northern lights. Accessible by chairlift, the station sits above the valley's frequent cloud layer, dramatically improving the odds of a clear-sky aurora display. Visitors stand in near-total darkness at altitude, the cold biting through clothing as ribbons of green and occasionally violet light sweep across the sky. The silence is profound — only the wind and the soft crackle of the lights in imagination. Below, the frozen Lake Torneträsk reflects faint light. The aurora season here spans the polar night months, with the clearest views coming on still, moonless nights when solar activity is high. The experience is visceral and humbling, a direct confrontation with planetary-scale electromagnetic forces playing out in real time overhead.
