About this spectacle

Anzali Lagoon is a sprawling coastal wetland along Iran's Caspian shore, where lotus blossoms carpet the water's surface in summer and dense reed beds rustle in the sea breeze. Visitors glide through narrow channels by boat, surrounded by the calls of waterfowl — herons, pelicans, ducks, and migratory species that pause here during spring and autumn flyways. The lagoon's murky green waters open into broader expanses where fishermen cast nets from wooden boats, lending the scene a timeless, working quality. In autumn the reeds turn golden and the air fills with the sound of wings as migrating birds descend in large numbers. Mist often settles over the water at dawn, muffling sound and lending an otherworldly stillness to the landscape. The meeting of freshwater inflows and the Caspian Sea creates a layered, biodiverse habitat where birdwatching and boat tours offer the primary experiences.
