About this spectacle

On 26 January 2028, Lisbon will find itself on the centreline of an annular solar eclipse, one of the most visually dramatic celestial events a city can experience. As the Moon slides in front of the Sun, the sky dims to an eerie twilight, temperatures drop noticeably, and birds may fall silent. At maximum annularity, a perfect ring of fire — the Sun's corona blazing around the Moon's dark disc — hangs in the sky for a brief, breathtaking interval. Crowds in the city's hilltop miradouros and along the Tagus riverfront will have unobstructed western horizons to view the event. Proper solar eclipse glasses are essential during all phases; only during the narrow annular ring phase may indirect viewing be attempted. The combination of Lisbon's urban skyline, the Tagus estuary, and the blazing annular ring creates a uniquely photogenic opportunity.
