Amur Falcon Stopover — Yellow Sea Coast
Tens of thousands of Amur falcons — the world's longest-migrating raptor — rest and feed along the Yellow Sea coast of Korea and China each autumn.
About this spectacle
Each autumn, tens of thousands of Amur falcons descend on the Yellow Sea coast — including the birding hotspot of Eocheong Island — to rest and refuel during one of the animal kingdom's most extraordinary migrations. Visitors scanning the sky at dawn may witness vast flocks wheeling overhead, perching on wires and trees, or hunting insects in coordinated bursts. The sheer density of birds during peak movement creates a living, shifting spectacle of slate-grey and chestnut plumage against the coastal light. Eocheong Island's position as a stepping-stone in the Yellow Sea makes it a magnet for this species and dozens of other migrant raptors and passerines passing through simultaneously. The atmosphere at the observatory is one of anticipation and quiet intensity, birders scanning with optics as waves of falcons arrive and depart with the morning thermals.
