American Falls — United States
A thundering 21-metre curtain of water on the US side of Niagara, famous for its rugged boulder-strewn base and spectacular winter ice formations.
About this spectacle
Standing at the brink of American Falls, visitors are enveloped by a wall of mist and the deep, continuous thunder of water cascading over a broad limestone crest. The falls drop sharply into a boulder-strewn plunge pool, sending spray high into the air that catches rainbow light on sunny mornings. Unlike the Canadian Horseshoe Falls just across the river, American Falls feels raw and jagged, with exposed rock talus at its base giving it a wild, untamed character. The Niagara River gorge frames the scene dramatically, and in winter the falls partially freeze into enormous ice formations that transform the landscape into something otherworldly. Walkways along Prospect Point allow visitors to stand within meters of the rushing curtain of water, feeling the vibration underfoot and the cool mist on their faces year-round.
