Amalfi Coast Cliffs
Dramatic limestone cliffs drop sheer into the Tyrrhenian Sea along one of Europe's most iconic coastlines, framing impossibly placed villages above turquoise waters.
About this spectacle
The Amalfi Coast presents one of Italy's most dramatic coastal landscapes, where near-vertical limestone cliffs plunge hundreds of metres into the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea. Perched villages — Positano, Ravello, Amalfi — cling impossibly to terraced slopes thick with lemon groves, bougainvillea, and Mediterranean scrub. Viewing the cliffs from the serpentine coastal road offers a dizzying succession of headlands, sea stacks, and hidden coves far below. The light is particularly vivid in the golden hours before sunset, when the warm southern Italian sun saturates the ochre and terracotta facades and turns the sea a luminous turquoise. Viewpoints along the SS163 road reward visitors with sweeping panoramas, while boat excursions reveal the sheer cliff faces and sea caves inaccessible from land. The scale and colour contrast — white limestone, deep green vegetation, azure water — make this one of Europe's most photographed coastal vistas.
