Alpine ibex — Vanoise
Watch alpine ibex — once nearly extinct — roam with extraordinary calm across the dramatic granite ridges of France's first national park.
About this spectacle
The Vanoise National Park in the French Alps harbors one of the most significant alpine ibex populations in Europe. Visitors scanning the steep limestone ridges and rocky screes may spot these sure-footed animals — males distinguished by their massive, curved horns — picking their way across near-vertical terrain that seems impossible to navigate. In summer, large groups gather on sun-warmed southern slopes, offering remarkable close views of animals largely unbothered by human presence. The air carries the scent of alpine flowers and the distant ring of cowbells from lower meadows. Rutting season in December and January produces dramatic clashes between males, while spring brings playful kids alongside their mothers on the high snowfields. Dawn and dusk offer the best light for watching ibex as they move between feeding areas and rocky retreats.
