Al Wahbah crater Volcanic Crater — Saudi Arabia
A vast volcanic crater in the Saudi desert hiding a brilliant white salt flat at its floor — one of the most dramatic geological formations on the Arabian Peninsula.
About this spectacle
Al Wahbah is a striking volcanic crater set in the remote Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia. Visitors descend into a wide, nearly circular bowl to find a blindingly white salt flat at its base — the remnant of an ancient lake. The crater walls rise steeply in layered volcanic rock, their rust-red and ash-grey tones shifting with the light. Silence dominates the interior, broken only by wind. On clear mornings the low-angled sun casts dramatic shadows across the rim, revealing the geological strata in vivid detail. Reaching the crater floor requires a moderately steep scramble down loose volcanic scree, rewarding those who make the descent with a surreal, other-worldly landscape rarely crowded with visitors.
