Aiguilles Rouges
A jagged ridge of rust-red crystalline peaks above Chamonix, offering striking alpine scenery and sweeping views toward Mont Blanc.
About this spectacle
The Aiguilles Rouges massif rises above the Chamonix valley in the French Alps, offering a dramatic counterpoint to the Mont Blanc range across the valley. Visitors are greeted by the vivid reddish-orange hues of the crystalline rock faces that give the area its name — the 'Red Needles' — particularly striking in the warm light of morning and late afternoon. The nature reserve protects a rugged alpine landscape of jagged peaks, glacial lakes, high meadows and rocky ridgelines. Marmots whistle from boulder fields, and the silence of the high terrain is broken only by wind and the distant sound of cowbells. Hiking trails and a cable car from Chamonix provide access to panoramic viewpoints looking across to the Mer de Glace and the Mont Blanc massif. The scenery is genuinely arresting and changes character through the seasons, from snow-draped winter ridges to wildflower-filled summer meadows.
