About this spectacle

Agua Azul is a cascade system in the highlands of Chiapas, where dozens of turquoise and blue-green waterfalls tumble over wide limestone terraces into foaming pools. The vivid colour comes from dissolved minerals — calcium carbonate — that accumulate on the riverbed and create the otherworldly palette visitors photograph obsessively. During the dry season the water runs at its clearest and most intensely blue, while the surrounding jungle presses in with dense tropical foliage, birdsong, and the constant roar of white water. Visitors walk a trail alongside successive cascades of varying heights, pausing at natural swimming pools where the current is calm enough to enter. The air is thick with mist close to the falls, cooling the humid jungle heat. Market stalls and local vendors line the access path, giving the site a lively, community-feel atmosphere that contrasts with the raw natural drama of the water itself.
