About this spectacle

At Boulders Beach, a sheltered cove near Simon's Town on the Cape Peninsula, a colony of endangered African penguins has made its home among ancient granite boulders just steps from the shoreline. Visitors walk along raised wooden boardwalks that wind close to the nesting birds, allowing remarkably intimate views without disturbing the colony. You'll hear the distinctive donkey-like bray of the penguins before you see them — adults waddling purposefully between burrows, preening in the morning sun, or squabbling over nest sites. Chicks emerge as fluffy grey balls of down, huddled beside their parents. The air carries a sharp, briny scent, and the sound of waves provides a constant backdrop. Year-round presence means any visit delivers real encounters, but mornings bring the most activity as birds return from or depart for morning feeding runs. The crystal-clear water and white sand framed by enormous rounded boulders create a visually spectacular setting that makes every moment feel otherworldly.
